Research Empowerment grant for sustainable lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycling

This project aims to strengthen Malaysia’s and UK’s capacity for sustainable lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycling through a collaborative effort between University of Warwick and Xiamen University Malaysia. The initiative focuses on knowledge exchange and technological advancements to support Malaysia’s burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) industry. Key activities include training programs, researcher exchanges, workshops and seminars, and community engagement. These activities aim to improve research capacity, build technical skills, and foster stronger industrial translation. Malaysia’s growing demand for electric vehicles has significantly increased the need for sustainable LIB recycling to reduce the associated environmental burden and resource wastage. UK has developed and owns key technology for LIB recycling and a globally leading sustainability assessment to orchestrate the joint development. This project harmonises that need and capability by exploring innovative methods, such as electrochemical techniques and microwave-assisted biomass pyrolysis, for valuable materials extraction from spent batteries.
