Martina Andellini and co-authors receive award from the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE)

Superb news coming from the ABSPIE Lab. PhD student Martina Andellini, supervised by Prof Leandro Pecchia, and the co-authors of the paper titled: “Clinical needs and technical requirements for ventilators for COVID-19 treatment critical patients: an evidence-based comparison for adult and pediatric age”, were awarded by the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) for one of the best journal-paper published in the field of clinical engineering in 2020, worldwide.

In this case, a special mention was given to the paper, as it was the first, and probably still the only one, providing evidence-based technical requirements for ventilators, including those for paediatric patients, which were essential in treating COVID-19 patients, especially during the first wave of this pandemic.

Originally published in the “Health and Technology” journal, the paper that was written during the first wave of Covid-19, criticizes and reveals the waste of time and resources for the management and the procurement of intensive care ventilators that was not guided by the evaluation of devices quality. This paper highlights the importance of prioritizing healthcare needs during an emergency and how a structured evidence-based approach for health technologies evaluation could optimize time and resource allocation.
