2018-19
Welcome to JAWS, the new "nerve-frying" junior algebraic geometry seminar at Warwick!
Want to be part of this bunch of ravenous algebro-geometric jaws? This seminar is what you are looking for!
You'll find a vibrant group of PhD students and young researchers in Algebraic Geometry and related fields welcoming the special guest: the speaker of the week!
Whether you wish to show a piece of your progress, a new topic that fascinated you, or you simply need new appetising nourishments for your greedy minds, this is the right place.
"Come to the dark side, we have cakes!" ... and refreshments in the common room afterwards!

Monday 10th June 2019, 4-5pm B3.03 Fabio Tanania (University of Nottingham) Subtle characteristic classes for Spin-torsorsIn this talk I will discuss the computation of the motivic cohomology ring of the Nisnevich classifying space of the spin group associated to the standard split quadratic form in bidegrees (q)[p] satisfying the condition p≤2q+1. As in topology, where the complete description has been obtained by Quillen, this happens to be not polynomial in the subtle Stiefel-Whitney classes introduced by Smirnov and Vishik, since new relations appear, coming from the action of the motivic Steenrod algebra on the second subtle Stiefel-Whitney class. Moreover, I will reduce the problem of computing the remaining part of the motivic cohomology ring of BSpinn to the problem of checking the regularity of a certain sequence in a polynomial ring. Finally, I will conclude by deducing from this computation some information on the kernel invariant of Spin-torsors or, which is the same, quadratic forms from I3. |
On a serious note: this seminar consists of weekly talks held at the Maths Institute of the University of Warwick.
Times and places can vary throughout the year: please check the updated calendar below.
