Warwick Centre for Global Health and Centre for Health Economics at Warwick held a joint seminar on the 21st May 2026 on the subject 'Hospital management practices to improve quality of care and reduce mortality for small and sick newborns in Malawi: the IMPRESS cluster randomised trial'.

Professor Timothy Powell-Jackson is Professor of Health Economics in the Department of Global Health and Development, and Co-Director of the Global Health Economics Centre, at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The seminar presented findings from the IMPRESS cluster randomised trial, a nationwide study conducted across 30 referral hospitals in Malawi. The research examined whether strengthening hospital management practices could improve the quality of care and health outcomes for small and sick newborns.

The study found that the intervention significantly improved hospital management practices and was likely to be cost-effective. While reductions in neonatal mortality were observed in intervention hospitals, the overall impact on mortality remained uncertain. The findings provide important new evidence on the role of management practices in strengthening health systems in low and middle income countries.
