Research Title:
Trial of Autologous Blood products to promote ulcer healing in Leprosy (TABLE)
About my research:
Aim: To evaluate a treatment based on autologous blood products – Leukocyte and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF), for the treatment of leprosy ulcers.
Design: Single centre, 1:1 individual randomised, single blinded, controlled trial.
Participants: Adults admitted to hospital with leprosy ulcer in the range 2-20 square centimetres.
Intervention: Leukocyte and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) applications at the time of dressing changes to ulcers twice per week. Controls get dressing change but no L-PRF.
Main Outcomes: Rate of healing as assessed by photographs taken in a standardised manner and assessed blind to intervention versus control status. Percentage wounds healed (re-epithelialization) by 70 days, assessed blindly from standardised photographs.
Sample size: One hundred and thirty consenting patients (65 in each arm).
Follow-up: Six months from randomisation.
Supervisors: Professor Paramjit Gill, Professor Richard Lilford
