Our Mission
Transforming health through innovative education and research excellence
About us
Warwick Medical School (WMS) started delivering post graduate medical education in the 1980s before admitting medical students in 2000, initially in partnership with Leicester Medical School and local NHS training and the establishment of University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust to succeed the previous Walsgrave Hospital, and then autonomously from 2007. Since becoming an independent Medical School, we have trained over 3000 doctors, distinguishable within the medical profession by the unique qualities of a Warwick Doctor, and we undertake significant research in partnership with six or so principal NHS organisations, sponsor two university NHS hospitals, as well as place students with four NHS trusts and over 70 NHS GP practices. Unlike many of the newer medical schools, we are also a research-intensive school – focusing on internationally excellent research in our areas of strength.
Our headcount is circa 550, with 105 independent researchers, of which 20% are clinical academics. Academic faculty are organised into three academic groups, Warwick Bio-Medical Sciences, Warwick Clinical Trials Unit and Warwick Applied Health, each supported by a mixture of both local and school-wide Professional Service Support colleagues. The Dean is supported by a Dean’s Executive comprising three Pro-Deans (Education, People and Research), Associate Dean for Medical Education, Chief Operating Officer, Directors of the three academic directorates, Chief Innovation & Engagement Officer, Chief Finance Officer, and Head of Human Resources.
Our 2030 Strategy
The University of Warwick 2030 strategy sets out the University’s vision of excellence with purpose, describing how Warwick will be one of the world’s exceptional universities, helping to transform our region, country and world for the collective good.
Warwick Medical Schools strategy was approved by the University in late 2019, soon to be overwritten by the challenges that COVID-19 would bring to us all personally and professionally. As a Medical School, we were thrust into the forefront of the nation’s response to COVID in ways not experienced elsewhere at the University of Warwick. This included operational response by our staff and students to the delivery of direct patient care, the co-ordination of testing and vaccination, providing expert advice to the government, health leaders regionally, nationally and internationally.
Our core values enabled us to respond to the unprecedented challenges of a global pandemic and to emerge with the opportunity to focus on our collegiality and strengths to achieve our vision.
The school’s vision speaks to the core business of health and our innovative approach to delivering excellent education and research. Our strategy embeds our commitments to innovation, social inclusion, sustainability, international, grand challenges, regional leadership into three core themes – education, research and people.
