BMS Informal Seminar: High resolution miniaturised endoscopy, Dr Kanwarpal Singh, Group Leader, Max Planck institute for the Science of Light, Erlangen, Germany
Abstract: Endoscopy is an essential pillar in the medical system. Current endoscopic devices rely on traditional imaging techniques such as white light imaging and narrow band imaging. Several advanced imaging techniques are already available in laboratory settings, however, clinicians still rely on biopsies extracted from the diseased tissue site and examined outside. The goal of our group is to close this gap between the research labs and the clinic and translate advanced imaging techniques into clinical settings. Our group focuses on the development of high-resolution miniaturized endoscopic devices for applications ranging from gastroenterology to oncology. Using our devices we would like to eliminate the need for biopsies and provide histological images in real-time from the tissue in its native state. We have developed endoscopes that operate in visible and near-infrared spectral ranges. We have miniaturized endoscopes based on confocal microscopy, optical coherence tomography and hyperspectral imaging. We have collaborated with several medical groups and currently studying inflammatory bowel disease, systemic sclerosis, and tonsilitis
