General Practice-based care and its role in delivering parental wellbeing support when caring for a child with intellectual disability: A mixed methods exploration

This PhD aims to understand the role of general practice-based care in delivering wellbeing support to parents of children with intellectual disability. These findings will feed into recommendations and development of an evidence informed health intervention plan, to improve general practice wellbeing support and service delivery with parents of children with intellectual disability. A mixed methods approach will be used to address the following key research questions:

  • How are the wellbeing needs of parents of children with intellectual disability considered during healthcare service engagement?

  • What wellbeing support do parents of children with intellectual disability currently receive from general practice and how is it perceived?

  • What are the unmet needs of parents of children with intellectual disability? How can general practice be delivered to sustain, and improve the wellbeing of parents of children with intellectual disability during service engagement?

Findings will contribute to the development of an evidence informed health intervention plan to ensure intervention matches priority for parents of children with intellectual disability.
