Background
General Practice (GP) is encountering problems relating to the recruitment, retention and satisfaction of GPs. This is exacerbated by the increased workload that stems from higher life expectancies and the movement of specialist services from secondary to primary care. This imbalance is raising concerns about the capacity of the General Practice workforce to safely and effectively meet patients’ needs.

Does location of primary medical qualification affect recruitment to and retention within UK General Practice?
How does the changing nature of general practice (increased salaried posts, private providers) affect retention?
Are sufficient posts available for newly qualified GPs to follow their chosen career path?
How do personal factors including a wish to pursue flexible working affeDoes trainees’ experience of GP workload and morale affect their career intentions?ct retention in general practice?
Does trainees’ experience of GP workload and morale affect their career intentions?
Do GP vocational trainee programmes adequately prepare trainees to consider a full range of career options including partnership?
The Study
Aim
To follow the career paths of West Midlands Trainees post – CCT to understand their career choices, experiences of working in general practice and career trajectory.
Method
A longitudinal cohort study.
The study will follow approximately 300 GP trainees completing training between July 2014 and June 2015.
Online questionnaires will be completed at: baseline, 6 months, 18 months, 3 years and 5 years following completion of training. The baseline survey will be undertaken within 3 months of completion of training, and will include:
