Research Strategy

Our strategic research objectives are:

  • To become a leading international centre for excellent medical research
  • To make significant breakthrough discoveries in biomedicine that have the potential for translation into therapies or diagnostics for the benefit of human health
  • To make significant contributions to research in health sciences that will advance cost effective, evidence-based healthcare that influences policy and makes a difference to quality of healthcare that is delivered, for the NHS and beyond

To achieve these, we:

  1. Create Research Centres: we build critical mass and establish centres of excellence in our areas of core research, in partnership with departments within the University and other universities and NHS and industry partners
  2. Invest in World Class Research Platforms: we invest in cutting edge technology in our areas of research excellence and ensure outstanding expertise to harness its potential. Where appropriate we do this collaboratively with other departments at Warwick and with other partners
  3. Maintain a Vibrant research culture: in addition to providing an environment where excellent facilities and researchers thrive, we support a vibrant seminar culture and programme of symposia for the exchange of ideas with outstanding external investigators
  4. Develop and nurture talent: we develop coordinated and well-resourced doctoral training programmes in our priority research areas, and build capacity by offering excellent career development opportunities for PhDs

We develop our early career researchers and grow our research leaders; and pursue novel areas in which WMS develops a reputation as research leader.

WMS was the first Medical School in England to achieve Athena Swann Silver status, and the first in the UK to receive the Bronze award. We support the career development of outstanding women scientists and minimise barriers to retention and career progression, promotional opportunities and leadership roles.
