Current Roles
I am Emeritus Professor of Public Health at the Warwick Medical School in the Division of Health Sciences at the University of Warwick, and Honorary Clinical Research Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences at the University of Oxford where I work with the Interdisciplinary Research In Health Sciences team
I am an Associate Fellow of Green Templeton College, Oxford and Chair of its Sheila Kitzinger programme I am a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Background
I have a 30+-year career as a doctor and academic I am an experienced board member. I am past Chair of the Faculty of Medicine at Warwick, past Chair of the Picker Institute and past President of the Society for Social Medicine and Population Health. I have worked with NICE as a member of the NICE Technology Appraisal Committee. At Warwick I built up a 40+research group. I founded Warwick Evidence which undertakes technology assessments and reviews for UK and international policy makers, and I now act as their senior academic advisor.
I studied medicine at the University of Oxford and trained and practised for a short time as a GP. I went on to train and work in academic Public Health at the London School of Hygiene &Tropical Medicine, before joining Warwick Medical School in 2007 and the University of Oxford in 2022.
Teaching and Research
My research interests lie at the interface between Public Health and Health Services Research. I have a very strong record of leading research teams and attaining research funding (over £35m in the last 10years) and have led over 200 publications and reports. I am an expert public speaker and networker and am experienced in working at board level and representing my institutions nationally and internationally.
I use multidisciplinary methods to distil best evidence and to understand and promote its use at the policy, organisational, population and individual levels to improve health. I undertake research on:
- Health technology assessments (HTAs) for NICE and other policy makers
- The relationship between research evidence and decisions in health care.
- Getting research evidence into individual clinical decisions including use of information, guidelines, shared decision making, decision analysis and choice
- Prevention and detection of diseases with an emphasis on screening.
I work with teams who undertake:
- research to provide NICE with the essential clinical and cost effectiveness information it needs to make decisions for current practice across the NHS
- systematic reviews for the National Screening Committee and other policy makers to help shape policy and practice
- research on remote care (video and telephone care) in general practice
