Current and Ongoing Projects:
- Facilitator training - ongoing
- Train CBL facilitators on working with a wide range of disabilities, and accommodating differences in a classroom and group work environment
- Update WMS / MB ChB webpages for transparency and accessibility
- Two of our committee members, through the Digital Education Internships, are working on transforming the digital experience for WMS students through reorganisation, updating, and providing a clear student voice
- CCE1 Transition mentoring
- Annual recruitment of peer mentors for students entering CCE1 with disabilities, learning differences, mental health conditions and/or any reasonable adjustments
- Matching to mentors with shared experiences, of the same trusts and blocks
- Sighted Guiding training for Phase I Skills
- Education in a regular Skills session on how to appropriately support someone with impaired vision
- Glasses to demonstrate various vision impairments for student learning
- Creation of an Lt workbook to accompany this session
- Reasonable Adjustments Policy
- Formalised policy outlining the duties of WMS to support students who have a Reasonable Adjustments Plan
- Includes appropriate, card-sized Health Passports for students to provide to faculty and placement with just the accommodations the student consents to disclose
- Ongoing input into digital course components
- Providing guidance and input on the accessibility of a wide range of educational resources, from transcripts to Moodle
Completed Projects:
- Neurodiversity & Specific Learning Differences; Signs and Assessment Pathways data collection
- Collated experiences of current MBChB students on how they recognised their ND / SpLD
- Transparent outline on the pathways for screening, assessment, diagnosis, and post-diagnostic support
- Will contribute to development of a Study Skills package for students with ND / SpLD
- Staff away day
- Full staff training day provided on the topic of disability in higher education
- Hosted solutions-focussed discussion groups on key issues or gaps in disability provision on the MBChB
- Awarding gap research
- Research project investigating exam performance and adverse educational outcomes conducted for all students on the MBChB in the last 10 years
- Identified strongly significant awarding gap and higher risk of adverse outcomes for disabled students (specifically SpLD, Chronic conditions, Mental health and Multiple conditions)
- Staff EDI group created to assess and address the awarding gap, adverse outcomes and other EDI issues at WMS
- Warwick Social Inclusion Conference
- Workshop and information session at the first ever WSIC promoting inclusivity and accessibility in higher education course design and delivery
- Participated in Widening Participation events throughout 2021-2022
- Informing and encouraging students with disabilities about applying for medical school
- Participated in Medical Schools Council annual EDI meeting
- Providing student perspective and insights to a national EDI board
- Input into the development of Eating Disorder teaching within the curriculum
- Supported the creation of a paid transcript reviewer role for students
