The overall aim of the Athena SWAN sponsored Warwick SMT Beacon Internships is to create opportunities to upskill ‘under-represented’ communities in clinical research, through mentored internships in healthcare technologies and healthcare innovation. The five Beacon Internships are:
- Ethnic Minority - for all ethnic minority communities
- Pride - LGBTQAI+ community
- Gender - for all under-represented genders, such as female-identifying, non-binary and transgender
- Neurodivergent - for all neurodiverse communities
- Widening Participation - for those from lower-income backgrounds
These Beacon Internships will allow for flexible working, allowing better access to those who have caring responsibilities or different internship access requirements. These Beacon Internships may be delivered throughout academic term-times and throughout academic holidays, in order to provide the opportunities to engage at the most appropriate time for the research project and interns. More information about the Beacon Internships, including the expectations of the intern, supervision and mentoring available throughout can be found in this documentLink opens in a new window.

We're the Warwick branch of CMF, an organisation which seeks to unite the Christian community of over 4000 UK doctors and 800 UK medical students - nationally and internationally!
We meet a few times a term to fellowship, by spending time together to eat, catch up, and just get to know and support each other. We often study the bible together and talk through topics that come up at Medical School that interact with our faith.

Under Jackie Shanley.
More information coming soon.
For students interested in Medical Education from a Digital perspective, this internship is arranged through one of our Senior Academic Technologists Cath Fenn.
For 2023 the students are Chloe Berg, Carmen Chung, Tom Paddock, Charlotte Pemberton, & Tom Shah.
Hours to commit per week are flexible to work around our other commitments, such as exams, placements, and our own lives! Through the internship we've been able to give back to our WMS community and be reimbursed for the work that we want to invest in improving the student experience at WMS. This means that we have been paid to review new digital platforms (VR, curriculum organisers), work with faculty (co-creating curricula and policy-guides), generate new digital learning content (revamping and creating numerous Student-made Guides, videos on utilising NHS E-portfolio), and build the new Student Hub!

In 2018, we launched our national conference, The National INSPIRE Graduate Entry Research in Medicine (GERM) Conference. The conference aimed to address the disadvantage GEM students face arising from the condensed nature of the course, which limits the opportunities GEM students have to disseminate their research. This limitation can be far-reaching, particularly when graduate-entrants conduct high-quality research, and yet time prohibits them from either truly benefitting from the experience, or from reaching their potential (in addition to excellent work being lost).

MedSoc is the Warwick University society representing the students of Warwick Medical School.
We're committed to helping all WMS students get the most out of their time here. From running socials to seminars, supporting societies to sports, charities to just chilling out – MedSoc is here for everyone. To find out more and to contact us about anything, visit our webpage here!
MedSoc runs a little like a 'mini-SU' for WMS; the vast majority of WMS societies are held under our responsibility. Therefore to join most of our societies, you must become a member of MedSoc - visit the SU hereLink opens in a new window to do so.
This conference aims to build connections between medical schools and provide both staff and students with the ability to learn about upcoming initiatives, present research and attend panels and workshops. This is with the overall aim of increasing attainment and overall graduate outcomes amongst ethnic minority medical students.
Peer-teaching specifically provided for, and taught by, students without a biological science background. There is no assumed prior knowledge, judgement, or such thing as a silly question here.
We run weekly sessions in the main lecture theatre - so there's no capacity on attendance. Science students are still welcome - just remember that these sessions are aimed at those who studied art, history, law, humanities - any non-biomed background!

RMD is a nationwide initiative to teach bystander CPR and BLS to as many people as possible. Through the (evidenced as best!) ethos peer-led teaching, we're student-led, and volunteer to teach BLS, AED, and first aid training to MB ChB Phase I students, who are expected to undertake the course. Sessions are taught to the standards of the European Resuscitation Council and run throughout the academic year on Monday evenings. We also hold community events in our outreach programme to teach these same skills to the public, which our members can volunteer at.
There’s opportunity to train to become a teacher on the course, and we hope to hold some fundraiser events throughout the year.
This programme is overseen by Dr Chris Smith & Dr Helen Poulton.

The BME Network exists to provide a safe space within WMS, where self-identifying BME students (including students of African, Asian, Arab and Afro-Caribbean descent, those from minority ethnic groups including those who identify as having mixed or multiple ethnicities) can come together, discuss the issues affecting them, and campaign to improve their student experience.
The aim of the Network is to create a safe and engaging space for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students through:
- Campaigning on issues impacting our members and to further the equality of BME students in the university environment.
- Organising various social events through interaction with BME students and continually adapting to changing student need.
- Supporting the network member's welfare, signposting to the various welfare and outreach programs in Nottingham and at the University.
The BME Network have had a period of inactivity for 2023 and are in the process of relaunching - in the interim, please reach out to ACMA or Asian Soc.
