Diabetes in Pregnancy

pregnant woman with diabetes

This two-day course will update healthcare professionals involved in the planning and delivery of care of women with diabetes who are pregnant, or those who develop diabetes during pregnancy. Taught by clinicians who specialise in diabetes, the course aims to equip you with the skills required to deliver high-quality care based on National Institute for Care and Health Excellence guidance.

Why study this course?

There is evidence that poor glycaemic control increases the risk of congenital anomalies in the newborn. Literature demonstrates how adverse foetal programming can be due to maternal obesity and hyperglycaemia. The prevalence of gestational diabetes is increasing worldwide, however patients often become lost to follow-up in primary care post-delivery, despite the increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

The course is designed to highlight these issues and underlying matters, reflecting on strategies that can be employed to improve our local clinical practice. The course will also provide hands-on experience concerning other technological developments in the field of diabetes in pregnancy, while using case workshops to provide working scenarios to embed learning into clinical practice.

Who is the course aimed at?

  • All healthcare professionals involved in the care of women diagnosed with gestational diabetes and those who have a specific interest in improving the follow-up of these women, both in primary and secondary care.
For example, this may include GPs, practice nurses and members of the multidisciplinary primary care team embodied in the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) such as advanced practitioners and dietitians. In secondary care, the course may be particularly relevant to roles such as clinical nurse specialists in diabetes and midwives.
  • Healthcare professionals involved in managing women with pre-existing diabetes in pregnancy or who are planning pregnancy.
  • We particularly welcome colleagues who have already completed the CIDC/IDC (Certificate in Diabetes Care or Improving Diabetes Care) Level 5 diploma course at the University of Warwick, along with those who have previously completed the Level 7 Diabetes in Pregnancy module.

Skills developed in this course

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the screening and diagnosis of gestational diabetes.
  • Review the guidance relating to the delivery of preconception care for women with pre-existing diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2).
  • Be aware of the need for optimal glucose control in the management of diabetes in pregnancy and the implications with regards to ongoing hyperglycaemia.
  • Consider the antenatal and intrapartum obstetric management for women with pre-existing diabetes or those diagnosed with gestational diabetes in pregnancy.
  • Interpret the effects of nutrition, exercise and weight in pregnancies complicated by diabetes and the impact postnatally when considering the risks factors for Type 2 diabetes following a diagnosis of gestational diabetes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of emerging technologies in the management of diabetes in pregnancy.
  • Review the management required during pregnancy for those women diagnosed with gestational diabetes, also considering the long-term implications in terms of postnatal follow-up, whilst also reflecting on the medico-legal aspects.
