In a cost and health-conscious world, health screening comes under constant scrutiny. How do we decide which screening programmes to introduce and which population groups to screen? What are the ethics behind screening? How do we quality assure programmes and ensure safety and effectiveness? This collaboration between Warwick Medical School and the UK National Screening Committee covers the underlying epidemiological principles of screening, as well as ethics and policy issues. This course will help those who commission, run or evaluate screening programmes locally or nationally, as well as help those interested in policy and practice in population screening to understand the important issues.
Who is this course aimed at?
This one day workshop in Health Screening is designed for staff implementing NHS screening programmes such as:
- Screening practitioners
- Commissioners
- GPs
- Nurses and midwives
- Hospital consultants
- Practice managers
- Public health managers
- Cancer and paediatric specialists
- Quality assurance officers and facilitators
- Clinical scientists
Course content
Topics covered include:
- Policy making and the UK NSC criteria for screening,
- test accuracy,
- the benefits and harms of screening,
- international approaches to policy making,
- organisational issues and quality assurance,
- health economics applied to screening,
- the ethics of screening.
In addition you will be provided with the tools to assess screening programmes through test performance, ethical issues and economic evaluation. You will also explore how to implement first-rate programmes though quality assurance. The most up to date policies, areas of debate and the future of screening programmes will be covered and discussed during the course.
A certificate of course attendance and course completion will be will be issued by the University of Warwick.
How will I learn?
This interactive course uses a mixture of teaching methods, including group work, practical exercises, current screening examples and case studies based on current NHS screening programmes. There is also a designated question and answer session with health screening experts
Entry requirements/experience required
None, but the course is designed for health professionals, clinicians, people involved in screening programmes, and those undertaking public health training.
