An interdisciplinary course, drawing upon expertise across a wide range of subject areas and seeking to explore the complexity of Public Health issues in the UK and internationally.

Module syllabus

Disease Prevention

• Targeted and population approaches to disease prevention/screening.
• Prevention paradox.
• Primary, secondary, tertiary prevention

Screening

• Principles, methods and applications of screening; sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values.
• Ethical and economic aspects of screening.
• Planning, operation and evaluation of screening programmes.
• Evidence for widely implemented screening programmes.

Health Protection

• Surveillance and methods of control.
• Design and management of immunisation programmes.
• Investigation of outbreaks.
• Epidemiology and management of common and important infectious diseases.
• Organisation of infection control; elementary molecular biology as related to microbiology.
• Understanding of non-communicable, environmental and chemical hazards.
• International aspects of communicable disease control.
• Principles of emergency planning.
