Increased public scrutiny has highlighted the need to strengthen leadership within the UK healthcare sector. This new programme brings together the expertise of Warwick Medical School and Warwick Business School to focus on the skills and behaviours needed to meet the challenges of leadership roles. The course has been designed both as a stand-alone certificate, and as the foundation for a Diploma/Masters degree in Leadership for Healthcare to be launched in 2015-16. |
The programme's modular stucture takes account of your own professional commitments, allowing you time to assimilate and practise what you have learnt. The course draws on the practical experience and research expertise of faculty in both WMS and WBS. You will be taught by academic staff with substantial experience of providing leadership in the NHS or internationally, as well as those who are subject-matter experts in their fields - an invaluable mix of the practical and the theoretical. |
This course is for people with a managerial, clinical or administrative background, who are interested in developing their leadership contribution int he healthcare sector.
The course can also be provided to a cohort of 15 or more participants from the same organisation or health economy. This approach combines all of the benefiits of an accredited University programme with the advantages of local delivery, the development of case studies based on local challenges and a tailored model of delivery.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand and critically evaluate the factors that lead to success for high performing healthcare systems nationally and internationally
- Understand and critically appraise the factors which contribute to a safe environment for patients and the role of leaders in creating such an environment
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the factors which contribute to the spread and to the sustainability of improvement and innovation in healthcare
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the relationship between cost and quality in healthcare delivery, and of the evidence to support interventions to improve efficiency
- Show a critical understanding of the use of key financial and accounting skills, including budget management, monitoring of financial performance, role of cashflow management
- Knowledge and a critical understanding of the value of, the major sources of data to support decision making in healthcare
- Knowledge and a critical understanding of the value and limitations of sources of evidence to support decision making in healthcare
Core modules
Modules will usually be delivered over five days, split into two blocks (three days + two days) separated by six to eight weeks. This allows time to put into practice what you have learnt and to reflect on your learning.
This PGCert programme will be the foundation for those who wish to progress to Diploma or Masters studies, planned to be available from 2015-16 onwards.
The minimum entry requirements are a second class honours (2:2) undergraduate degree or the international equivalent. Applicants with appropriate prior experience and learning will be considered.
If your first language is not English you will be expected to obtain one of the following recognised English Language qualifications:
- IELTS (British Council International Testing System) overall score of at least 6.5 (with 6.5 in the reading and writing components)
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) of at least 600 (paper based) or 250 (computer based) or 92 (internet-based iBT)
- PTE (Pearson Test of English) score of 55
Teaching will be provided by a combination of academics with substantial experience of working within the healthcare sector and subject matter experts from the field.
Typical sessions will entail lectures, seminars and workshop formats, with a maximum of 30 attendees, while some elements of the course will be underpinned by online learning.
Students will have access to the full range of library and IT facilities provided by The University of Warwick.
There will be a 4,000 word assignment for each module, which will relate to the workplace. Assessments will be submitted online.
All assessments are designed to integrate the theoretical knowledge acquired during the programme with real world application in the workplace.
