Core Studentships 2027
Medical Research Council-funded DTP in Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research
Our 3i (interdisciplinary, innovation, industry) Biomedical Research PhD Programme will train the next generation of interdisciplinary researchers with the computational fluency, adaptability, and breadth to address major biomedical challenges. Entrepreneurial thinking will be embedded throughout, supported by Warwick’s growing international partnerships across academia, industry, and the NHS. We have two research themes: Molecular Basis of Human Disease and Combating Infection.
Multiple, fully-funded 'Core' studentships are available to join Warwick’s MRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnership (MRC DTP) in September 2027. The programme involves an exciting one-year MSc in Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research, followed by a three-year PhD project in world-leading biomedical and health research groups using novel approaches from the engineering, mathematical, computational and physical sciences. Students join a dynamic DTP community, which includes advanced workshops, transferable skills training, careers support and cohort learning events and conferences with ~50 other students.
We are constantly working to create a supportive and inclusive environment to help students achieve their best potential, through promoting equality and challenging discrimination. We want our students to feel heard and valued for their hard work. We welcome and encourage applications from minoritised groups that are under-represented in academia.
PROGRAMME CONTENT
MSc (Year One)
Students undertake a series of taught components spanning cutting-edge biomedical research techniques, biophysics, microscopy and imaging (including electron and super-resolution microscopy), mathematical modelling of biological systems, and mass spectrometry. They also complete two laboratory-based research projects, gaining hands-on experience in different research environments before choosing their PhD.
PhD (Years Two, Three and Four)
Students co-design a three-year interdisciplinary PhD project in one of two research areas - Molecular Basis of Human Disease or Combating Infection– with the possibility of a placement in the NHS, industry or overseas at international partners.
Career Transition
After submission of the PhD thesis, all students will receive funding to complete a 6-month Career Transition Fellowship. This is a flexible programme, allowing students to explore opportunities for developing their future career. This can range from secondment to a laboratory to learn new skills to placements in industry.
