International students: Please note that Band 2 fees apply.

Laboratory-based projects:

For laboratory-based projects, self-funded PhD students will be expected to contribute towards the costs of consumables each year, which may vary depending on the project. Often, the supervisor will be able to complement the costs, so please do discuss this with them.

PhD by Published work:

Students will be liable to pay one full year'sfees, even if their period of registration is the minimum 6 months.

Entry Requirements

Degree requirements:

2:1 UK honours degree or equivalent or a Master's degree with Merit or equivalent.
For international students, please see the International Office's equivalent scores table.

Having previous research experience is recommended to enter a PhD course. If you do not have previous research experience, please consider applying for one of our MSc by research where you will be immersed in a research project for one full year.

English language requirements:

We require evidence that your English language capability is of a level that will enable you to succeed on your chosen course of postgraduate study. Different courses ask for different standards of English language achievement.

Academic references:

Two academic references are required for postgraduate research courses.
Please nominate referees who can provide an informed view of your academic ability and suitability for your chosen programme of study.
The University will accept professional references if you have been out of higher education for over two years and these must be submitted by your current or most recent line manager.
Please note that personal references, such as those from family and friends, are not acceptable.
