Integrated Science: Chemical Principles of Living Systems

This module introduces the chemical principles that underpin living systems. Covering the chemistry of biological molecules and their supramolecular assemblies, it equips students with fundamental knowledge of organic chemistry, enzymatic catalysis, cellular energetics, and protein synthesis, alongside continued development of practical laboratory skills.

After completing the module, you will be able to:

  • Explain molecular bonds and reactions
  • Visualise 2D and 3D structures of molecules using computing tools
  • Predict molecular properties of key natural and synthetic biomolecules based on their chemical structures
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the mechanisms of enzymatic catalysis, cellular energetics, and protein synthesis
  • Build on safe working practices in an experimental laboratory
  • Demonstrate progress in practical experimental skills, including record taking
  • Build experiences in quantitative data analysis, critical interpretation of experimental data, and writing a scientific report
