Quantitative Problem Solving 3: Computing Tools & Artificial Intelligence

This module introduces students to the AI tools and computational methods useful for biological studies. It provides the theoretical foundations for a range of data analysis approaches — from numerical optimisation and clustering to neural networks and biological image analysis — and gives students hands-on experience applying machine learning techniques to biological datasets.

After completing the module, you will be able to:

  • Explain the intuitive principles behind various data analysis tools, including what they model and how they assess model fit
  • Apply appropriate data analysis methods to diverse biological datasets using existing computational libraries
  • Demonstrate hands-on experience in solving problems using machine learning techniques
