INS Modules
Foundational Laboratory and Computing Skills
The module aims to equip students with essential core skills in laboratory work and scientific computing and introduces you to the fundamental principles of molecular biology. No previous laboratory or computing experience is necessary; everything is taught from first principles. This module functions to bring students up to speed with the course philosophy and prepare them for the main modules that will follow.
After completing the module, you will be able to:
- Operate safely within a laboratory environment.
- Accurately record experimental data in a laboratory setting.
- Use coding techniques to process data from experiments in molecular cell biology and relevant physical sciences.
- Demonstrate ability to correctly structure and comment code to achieve a defined programming goal.
- Demonstrate experimental skills in basic molecular cell biology.
- Explain the principles of information flow in molecular biology from DNA to RNA to protein.
- Explain how DNA can be manipulated to produce recombinant organisms.
