Integrated Biochemistry

This module introduces the foundations of enzymology and synthetic biology to Year 2 Integrated Natural Sciences students. Adopting an integrated science approach, it combines principles from chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computation to explore the mechanisms and design of biological systems, including core methodologies for enzymatic catalysis, regulation of enzymatic reactions within metabolic pathways, and a synthetic biology approach that repurposes the cellular protein synthesis machinery.

 

After completing the module, you will be able to:

  • Critically explain and relate key concepts in enzymology to biological function
  • Design and evaluate assays for enzymatic reactions, including appropriate controls and data interpretation
  • Construct and analyse mathematical models and computational simulations of enzymatic systems to predict catalytic behaviour and regulation
  • Explain and compare the catalytic mechanisms employed by enzymes, supported by mechanistic and structural evidence
  • Predict how an enzymatic system can be manipulated
