Quantitative Problem Solving 2: Mathematical Skills
This module bridges the gap between A-level and university-level mathematics, providing foundational mathematical skills for Integrated Natural Science students. It develops an intuitive understanding of calculus, probability, statistics, and linear algebra, with a strong emphasis on using computing tools to explore mathematical concepts and solve scientific problems.
After completing the module, you will be able to:
- Apply mathematical thinking to solve problems such as pH buffering, absorbance, enzyme kinetics, and population growth
- Use coding tools to perform mathematical experiments, simulate biological systems, and create effective visualisations of data and models
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of mathematical foundations for estimation, approximation, and logical reasoning in scientific contexts
- Interpret statistical distributions to analyse biological data with variability and uncertainty
- Explain the concept of statistical hypothesis testing and perform basic tests
