Integrated Science: Physical Principles of Living Systems
This module explores the physical principles governing living systems, from random motion and polymer mechanics to membrane potentials and neuronal circuits. Students develop their ability to apply physical reasoning to the structures and behaviours of living cells and tissues, and gain practical experience in quantitative microscopy.
After completing the module, you will be able to:
- Explain the difference in mechanics at subcellular vs organismal length scales
- Demonstrate a grasp of physical law as it applies to the structures and behaviours of living cells and tissues
- Describe and interpret the mechanisms by which life harnesses electrical forces
- Build on safe working practices in an experimental laboratory
- Demonstrate progress in practical experimental skills, especially in quantitative microscopy
- Build experiences in quantitative data analysis with coding, critical interpretation of experimental data, and writing a scientific report
