Creating & Testing a Hypothesis: Small Group Science Projects
This module gives students the opportunity to create and test a hypothesis, drawing on skills learnt from practical and computing modules throughout the year. Working in small groups guided by an academic tutor, students choose whether to pursue an experimental or computational project, formulate a specific hypothesis, and design and execute a project to test it, working within a defined budget.
After completing the module, you will be able to:
- Formulate a clear and testable hypothesis based on scientific principles and prior knowledge from practical and computational modules
- Collaborate effectively within a small group to design and plan an experimental or computational approach for hypothesis testing working within a defined budget
- Apply appropriate experimental or computational techniques to collect, process, and analyse data relevant to the chosen hypothesis
- Interpret and evaluate results critically, identifying sources of error and limitations in the chosen methodology
- Communicate scientific findings clearly and accurately, using appropriate formats such as written reports and oral presentations
- Reflect on the research process, demonstrating awareness of ethical considerations, teamwork dynamics, and constructive feedback to peers
