Integrated Science: Systems of Cells in Action
This module introduces biological phenomena as systems of interacting cells. Building on molecular and genetic foundations from earlier modules, it explores the chemical and physical mechanisms underlying cell signalling, cell motility, tissue morphogenesis, and immune responses, combining theoretical understanding with continued laboratory and computational skills development.
After completing the module, you will be able to:
- Explain the biochemical and mechanical foundations of cell signalling, cell motility, and tissue morphogenesis
- Describe broad mechanical principles underlying embryogenesis
- Use molecular genetics and genomics as tools for discovery
- Describe the molecular mechanisms for immune responses
- Explain the significance of immunity for human health
- Demonstrate safe working practices in an experimental laboratory
- Perform practical experiments to investigate the structure and dynamics of cells and their organelles
- Apply quantitative data analysis and coding to interpret experimental results and write a scientific report
