MB ChB - Year Four

You will have six Specialist Clinical Placements in Year Three and the remaining two in Year Four.

Each placement lasts six weeks and scheduling varies by student group.

• Psychiatry
• Child Health
• Musculoskeletal Healthcare
• Obstetrics and Gynaecology
• General Practice

This placement will enable you to consolidate the knowledge and practise the skills you acquired earlier in the course in a practical clinical context, as you prepare for the final year summative assessments and for your clinical Assistantship. The placement will thus complement the specialist clinical experience you will have gained during the preceding seven clinical placements.

You will have an opportunity to spend time in a range of clinical settings to review common and important clinical cases, as well as flexible opportunities to address individual learning needs.

For six weeks in Year Four you will undertake an elective project in a setting of your choice.

You have the opportunity to study a field of healthcare or human health of your choice in some more depth. Students often choose to undertake their projects outside the UK, to observe how medicine is practiced in another country and to experience a different social, cultural and physical environment.

Students from other institutions

We do not currently additionally negotiate for places for students from other institutions with our healthcare partners. Those partners are, however, at liberty to accept additional students if they wish and should be approached directly.

This course element will continue to prepare you to start practice as a Foundation Year 1 (FY1) doctor. You will be provided with further hands-on learning experiences that will enable you to work within clinical settings and practise clinical skills.

You will be integrated within a clinical team and be responsible for carrying out specified duties under appropriate supervision, thus smoothing your transition from medical school to FY1 clinical practice.
