MB ChB Modules

Year Two

Year Two builds on the strong foundation established in Year One, offering a familiar learning environment while gradually shifting your focus from class-room-based study to developing the skills and confidence needed to succeed in hands-on clinical settings.

Your placements will take you across acute hospitals, community care, mental health services, and regional GP practices, offering a rich mix of patient contact. You’ll take part in ward rounds and outpatient clinics, gaining valuable insight into how healthcare teams work together to deliver patient care. You’ll be supported by experienced consultants from a wide range of specialties, giving you a broad and well-rounded clinical experience.

Your learning will be organised into:

Academic Block

This element of the course will integrate and expand on the areas covered in Year One and provide you with a graded transition to the practical issues and learning style needed for learning in the clinical environment. This block will allow you to consider multisystem disease and the links between primary and secondary care. You will be working with advanced clinical cases in group work and self-study with focused plenary lectures.

During the block you will develop your skills in critical analysis of clinical information, team working and communication and start to apply a problem based approach to your history taking and examination

Core Clinical Education

In this element of the course, you will spend most of your time in the clinical environment, building upon the theoretical material learned in earlier years and applying it in a practical clinical context. To facilitate your learning, you will be attached to partnerships of consultants drawn from a wide range of clinical specialties.

You will also continue to develop your clinical skills, using them with patients in a supervised environment on a day-to-day basis.

Core Clinical Education includes time spent in Medicine, Surgery (including Orthopaedics) and Anaesthetics and the specialties of General Practice, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Child Health and Psychiatry.

Learning opportunities include participation in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary team meetings, operating theatres, out-of-hours and on-call clinical experience. Learning extends beyond timetabled teaching, with students encouraged to take an active role in directing their own development. Each day offers a unique learning experience, shaped by the diverse patients and healthcare professionals you encounter.

Student Selected Component

In Year Two, you will undertake a Student Selected Component (SSC), which you will chose from a range of options. Each option has broad relevance to the core MB ChB curriculum and will enable you to explore a particular topic in greater depth.
