What work experience had you gained before coming here?
I did a few placements shadowing consultants as most people do. I also worked as a ward volunteer for around 18 months spread across orthopaedics and gastroenterology and helped in the care of my late grandfather, who suffered from Alzheimer's.
Why did you choose Warwick?
Being the biggest graduate-only medicine course I thought it would be the ideal place to study. I felt that it would be easier to get on with a cohort of people who had all been through university before rather than starting from scratch.
How are you finding the MB ChB so far?
I'd say overall I'm enjoying the experience. Like everything there are little problems that pop up but these seem to be handled relatively quickly! I like the range of experience we get so early on, too. From speaking to friends on other medicine courses it seems that such early clinical experience is something specific to Warwick.
What do you most enjoy about the course?
I'd say I enjoy the days in hospital the most. Also any lecture given by Jamie Roebuck!
Has anything surprised you about the course?
How much you learn so early on, specifically when it comes to clinical skills and examination.
Have you been involved in any extracurricular activities during your time here?
I've played for the medics cricket team but most of my spare time is spent in a local CrossFit gym when I'm not in uni or hospital.
Do you have any ideas at this stage about what you’d like to specialise in in the future?
From my previous degree I have an interest in wound healing and this is drawing me towards a career in plastic surgery. I'd hope to also have the option of taking part in some form of research in the field at some point in my career.
Do you have any advice for people applying?
Get as much work experience as you can and keep a reflective diary as you go. You'll find it so much easier to answer the interview questions if you've already reflected on your experiences prior to the day.
