Warwick medical students launch national teaching initiative

CORE

Four Warwick MB ChB students have launched a national teaching initiative designed to support clinical-year medical students across the UK.

Nur Mousa, Ibrahim Al-Jibouri, Imen Rezgui and Adam Ahmed have set up CORE to provide accessible, practical teaching that supports both clinical competence and academic development, particularly in areas such as imaging interpretation and advanced clinical skills. The programme also offers guidance on getting involved in research. It is supported by Warwick Medical School and guided by consultant and registrar supervisors from NHS trusts across Coventry and Warwickshire, who contribute to and oversee sessions.

Nur explains: "Our aim is to deliver structured teaching that complements clinical placements and strengthens clinical confidence ahead of OSCEs, finals and foundation training. We prioritise small group learning, interaction and real clinical application."

The team come from a range of clinical and research backgrounds, and their previous academic and healthcare experience has shaped the structure and focus of the programme. Ibrahim says: "Through setting up this teaching programme, I have been able to utilise my background in optometry to support and deliver clinical teaching in ophthalmology, an area where students often have limited hands-on exposure during training."

The first sessions took place in April 2026, focusing on ophthalmology and ultrasound, and the team are planning to deliver a total of 10 sessions over the coming weeks. Feedback so far has been very positive:

"This was a great opportunity to practice ophthalmoscopy. The presentation before the practical aspect was very useful and concise, summarising the most important basics regarding ophthalmoscopy. Ibrahim was very knowledgeable and its clear he has lots of experience."

"Imen was very helpful in improving my understanding of emergency ocular conditions, particularly by putting them into perspective through her own clinical experience."

"Adam was excellent throughout the session, clearly demonstrating the technique and then guiding me through performing it myself, explaining findings as we went. His support made the learning experience much more approachable and engaging. The teaching session beforehand by Nur was extremely helpful in revisiting key anatomy and was delivered in a really clear and engaging way."

"This was a very valuable session. Ultrasound is an important skill for doctors yet we often have limited hands on exposure so this was particularly beneficial."
