International MB ChB student profile: Jack (Chun Cheong)

Jack (Chun Cheong) completed an undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Essex, an MPhil at Oxford and a Master's in Nursing at the Chinese University of Hong Kong before coming to Warwick. He also gained valuable experience working as a registered nurse in an A&E department. Here he tells us why he chose to study medicine at Warwick and shares his tips for those considering joining the course.

Why did you decide to study medicine at Warwick Medical School?

The UK offers a safe and nurturing environment that really lets me focus on my studies, which was a big factor in my decision. As for Warwick Medical School, there were several aspects that stood out to me. I was impressed by the strong sense of community and peer support among the students, as well as the active involvement in local communities. The accelerated four-year program was also appealing, as it allows me to enter the medical field sooner.

Lastly, the recognition of Warwick's medical degree by the Medical Council of Hong Kong gives me the flexibility to decide where I want to practice in the future. All of these factors combined made WMS a clear top choice for me!

How did you find the transition to life and study in the UK?

The transition has been incredibly smooth! Everyone, from the staff at WMS to my fellow students, has been very welcoming and supportive. I felt settled in no time at all, which has made the experience really enjoyable.

How have you found the MB ChB so far and how have you found your overall Warwick experience as an international student?

As an international student, I’ve felt right at home during my MB ChB at Warwick. Both culturally and academically, it’s been a fantastic fit for me. I’ve really enjoyed our clinical placements - there’s nothing quite like learning directly from experienced doctors and professors in a hands-on environment. It’s also reassuring to know there’s always a strong support system, with personal tutors and various support staff ready to help whenever needed. One of the highlights has definitely been engaging in deep discussions about medicine during our anatomy sessions. It’s moments like these that remind me why I chose this path!

Have you been involved in any extracurricular activities?

Absolutely! I took part in the Basic Surgical Skills day organised by our Surgical Society, which was a great hands-on learning experience. I’m also involved in the Warwick-Chester Medical School peer support program as a mentor, where I get to share my experiences with incoming students. Plus, I’ve set up a smart home gym for some weight-lifting - one of the perks of living in the UK is having the space and opportunity to create my own little fitness haven!

What tips do you have for other international applicants?

My main tip would be to reflect on the qualities that make a good doctor and think about how your own experiences demonstrate those traits. And above all, just be your genuine self throughout the process!
