A group of staff and postgraduate students from the department inspired students and teachers with exciting experiments and interactive games at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham at the end of June.

Over the three-day period, 25,000 students and teachers attended the fair visiting a range of exhibition stands from Universities to industry leaders such as Rolls Royce, JCB and National Grid who were all showcasing the fun and exciting things to get involved in with science.

A team of 15 staff, postdocs and students attended the fair to showcase their work from the Department of Physics covering two topics. One from the Astronomy and Astrophysics group which was represented by Lauren Doyle, Yoshi Eschen, Rebecca Nealon, Thomas Wilson, Gareth Jones, Taf Zivave, Isobel Lockley, Vedad Kunovac and Ben Davies. They showcased the wonders of the universe through an interactive table which allowed students to experience and explore stellar life cycles, gravitational/orbital mechanics, and the advancement of civilisations. From the Condensed Matter group, Paul Goddard, Dan Mayoh, Reza Kashtiban, Freya Watson, Mairi O’Brien and Ally Caldecote who showcased the amazing properties of high-temperature superconductors through a levitating train set.

It was a fantastic event over the three days and the team hope they have inspired a future generation of scientists.
