September was another good month with awards of nearly £1m, Dominated by a £700k spintronics grant led by David Leadley. Steve Dixon, Julie Stunton Tony Arber, Rudolf Romer also contributed:

Research gives crystal clear temperature readings from toughest environments

Researchers at the University of Warwick and Oxford University have developed a form of crystal that can deliver highly accurate temperature readings, down to individual milli-kelvins, over a very broad range of temperatures: -120 to +680 degrees centigrade. Physics Finances 2010/11

The finances for 2010/11 have now been released. it was a good year for physics. The headline results are:

£1m operating surplus We had a plan for £0.5m surplus, but exceeded the the plan substantially
£5m gross surplus We have contributed £5m to the university of which £4m is our share of University running costs.
