In December 2022, the US’ National Ignition Facility demonstrated fusion energy gain for the first time in any controlled fusion experiment. Using laser-driven Inertial Confinement Fusion, more fusion energy was output than that supplied by the lasers. Globally this has re-invigorated laser Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) research – potentially a source of near-infinite, carbon free, safe, energy. This talk will describe what laser fusion is, the key remaining challenges, and UPLiFT – the UK programme which aims to address these challenges over the coming years.
