Adrian LaMoury (Imperial): Magnetosheath Jets and Magnetopause Reconnection: Recent Discoveries and Challenges
Location: B2.04/05
Abstract: Magnetosheath jets are transient plasma entities found within Earth’s turbulent magnetosheath. Originating from non-linear processes at the quasi-parallel bow shock, these planet-sized coherent structures propagate with high dynamic pressure, striking the magnetopause several times an hour. Upon impact, jets can generate surface waves, stimulate auroras, and modulate magnetic reconnection. The full extent of their contribution to wider magnetospheric dynamics, however, is not yet well-understood. In this talk I will review what we know about jets, from first discoveries to recent developments and outstanding challenges, with a particular focus on the role of jets in reconnection at the magnetopause.
