Physics Colloquium - Dr Amy Shelton, CChem (Senior Research Manager, Radioactive Waste Management)"Geological Disposal – The UK’s largest Environmental Protection Project” Since the 1950’s, radioactive waste has been generated and is currently safely stored at a number of nuclear sites around the UK. Radioactive Waste Management Ltd. (RWM)’s mission is to deliver a permanent solution to the safe disposal of these materials, through the siting and construction of a Geological Disposal Facility or ‘GDF’. This lecture explores the history of radioactive waste generation in the UK, the process of finding a suitable site for such a facility and the vital role of science and technology in underpinning the safety of this major infrastructure project. |
