Dr Brinda Kuthanazhi

I am a Research Fellow in the Superconductivity and Magnetism Group, working on the project "Controlling the formation and properties of topological magnetic phenomena" with Prof. Geetha Balakrishnan and Prof. Daniel Mayoh. I have expertise in the design and synthesis of a variety of new materials, from solar absorbers to topological magnets, and their characterisation by structural and physical property measurements.

Overview of my research

My research work involves the crystal growth and study of single crystals of various magnetic compounds. The materials that I study have a wide range of physical properties and host a variety of newly discovered exotic states of matter, including Skyrmion materials, Weyl semimetals, etc.

The investigation of the physics of all the materials involves a wide range of techniques, including in-house magnetic, thermodynamic and transport measurements, as well as the use of central facilities using X-ray diffraction, neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy techniques.

My research profile

From October 2023 to June 2025, I worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Chemistry, University of Liverpool, under the supervision of Prof. Matthew Rosseinsky. I was working on the design and discovery of the next generation solar absorber materials.

I completed a PhD in Physics from Iowa State University in May 2023, under the supervision of Prof. Paul Canfield. My thesis was on the Synthesis and characterization of single crystals of Rare-earth containing magnetic topological semi-metal candidates.Link opens in a new window

Teaching

Graduate teaching assistant at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Iowa State University, from August 2016 to December 2017. I delivered lab and recitation (tutorial) sessions for Introductory Physics courses on Electromagnetism (Fall 2016) and Classical Mechanics (Spring 2017). I also graded graduate-level Electricity and Magnetism course (Fall 2017).
