The deadline for course applications is not the same as deadlines for funding.
Course Applications
There is not a specific deadline for course applications. If you require funding, we recommend submitting your application as early as possible once applications open in October.
Applicants who do not require funding can apply at any time, but we recommend applying by the end of June to ensure there is enough time for your application to be processed before the start of the course. This is particularly important if you require a visa to study.
Scholarship Applications
Different scholarship opportunities have their own deadlines. Applicants who require funding should check the deadlines associated with the specific sources of funding.
For our Department Led Scholarships there is not a specific deadline, and applications are considered on a rolling basis until suitable candidates are found. Therefore, we recommend submitting your course application as early as possible in order to be considered for this funding.
Other scholarship opportunities that are not managed by the Department of Statistics have their own deadlines and requirements. Please see our Fees & Funding page and the Doctoral College webpages for more information on other opportunities available.
In general, it is best to submit the course application at least four weeks before a funding deadline, as many funding sources expect you to have an offer before you apply for funding.
For applications to the Statistics Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) programme, a research proposal is not required. The University's application portal requires applicants to upload a research proposal. We suggest applicants upload a blank document or reupload their personal statement.
Some scholarship competitions require the inclusion of a research proposal. If you would like to apply for any funding sources other than the Department Led Scholarships, please check the guidance on the relevant scholarship pages to confirm if a research proposal is required as part of the course application. There is no application fee for the MPhil/PhD Statistics course.
All PhD students in the Department of Statistics are expected to join the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Statistics. This includes a formal training component that starts in Term 1. Therefore, incoming PhD students are expected to start at the beginning of the academic year (late September or early October). Only in exceptional circumstances can we deviate from that.
Due to the nature of the CDT training in the first year, the majority of students undertaking a PhD in Statistics are full-time students. If you wish to be considered as a part-time applicant, please contact the CDT Team before applying.
The maximum duration of the course is 4 years for full-time students and 7 years for part-time students.
If you would like to apply for part-time study, please specify this on your application form.
The interview is a 20-minute informal chat with the PhD Admissions Tutors. You will not be expected to give a presentation or prepare slides.
The interview will not include mathematical or technical questions (unless the Admissions Tutors feel it is appropriate).
Interviews are normally conducted by video conference.
If you are a current Warwick student or are living in the UK, you may request an in-person interview. Please be aware that we may not always be able to accommodate requests, as this is dependent on staff availability and scheduling constraints.

The Department of Statistics will only consider applications for PhD by Published Work from Warwick alumni.
