Merry Christmas!

A pop up card designed and made by a primary student to celebrate Christmas. It shows three boxes popping up out of the card as if they were stacked up.

Paper Engineering:

Design your own Pop-up Card

How can we turn a lowly piece of paper into something dramatic, 3D, and exciting? We can use engineering design principles to create scenes hidden inside cards that are revealed as they are opened. Find out how to create your own pop up cards with our Paper Engineering resource box.

See our paper engineering pages below

Who can get a box?

WMG Outreach produce roughly 50 of each of our two resource boxes each year to send out to local schools and community groups. There is always more interest than we are able to satisfy so unfortunately we do need to prioritise who we send the boxes to.

To make sure that no one misses out, all of our resources are shared on the website for you to download and print for yourself.

We prioritise groups in the following ways:

  • Schools that we have an existing relationship with through the University's Widening Participation team.
  • Schools that have a higher than average (for the West Midlands) percentage of students in receipt of Free School Meals.
  • Primary schools that feed into a Secondary school with whom we have an existing relationship (e.g. LBEEP or Experience Warwick).
  • Community groups that are local to the University of Warwick.
  • Community groups that are supported by University of Warwick staff.

Click on one of the boxes to find out more and register your interest.

A row of paper lanterns that have been folded out of flat sheets of paper. They are all in bright colours following the rainbow.

Flatpack Materials:

Create a 3D object from flat materials and design a Festive scene

Most products you can buy from the shop are packaged in a way to make their transport more efficient. It means many of us have battled with a screwdriver to get a new bookshelf! Why do engineers flatpack things? How can we design things to fit neatly into a box? And more importantly - how can we turn flat sheets of material into exciting 3D shapes?

Find out how to turn pieces of paper into 3D objects with our Flatpack resources below

2024 WINNER!

We are delighted to announce our winner of the 2024 competition.
Congratulations to St Anne's Catholic Primary School!
The children not only built 3D models but they also motorised them and organised a Santa's sleigh race. Very creative and showing some important engineering skills. You can see a video of their entry here as well

See our other entries below. We had so many creative and beautiful entries. It was a pleasure to review them all and we were really impressed by the children's hard work and engineering skills. We hope you all had a lot of fun making those pop up cards and 3D models. Well done everyone!

All Saints CoE Primary

A beautiful herd of reindeers to pull Santa's sleigh. Can you spot Rudolph? Incredible team work. A great way to bring all these 3D models together!

Binley Woods Primary

A forest of cards to wish you all a merry Christmas. All we are missing now is the snow on the tree tops. Santa's elves would be very impressed!

Priors Field Primary

The gingerbread men are taking the castle defended by the squirrels. Stars and snow drops move in the breeze whilst garlands and baubles decorate the castle towers. Very poetic and creative use of the playground!
