Dr Andreas Kokkinis, expert in corporate governance, corporate theory, and financial regulation, has been busy discussing Brexit over the last few weeks after his recent briefing paper for the GLOBE centre on ‘The Impact of Brexit on the Legal Framework for Cross- Border Corporate Activity’.

He discussed the Brexit withdrawal agreement and whether Northern Ireland will have to follow EU single market rules to avoid a hard border.

On International Women’s Day 2018, we asked Vanessa Munro, Head of Warwick Law School, to talk about the women that inspired her in her life.

Current PhD student, Sean Mulcahy, will be hosting a colloquium event all around Law and Performance at the University of Warwick and is looking for three enthusiastic undergraduate student volunteers to help throughout the day on Saturday 24 March.

LLM student Julie Chu is only in the second term of her degree in International Economic Law (IEL) here at Warwick, yet she has already secured a job in London for after graduation. She will be joining the Financial Services team of EY Audit and Assurance this autumn as an associate. We caught up with Julie to find out more.

We are always proud of our students and the amazing things they do and this month was no exception. At the beginning of February, Professor Shaheen Ali hosted an event to celebrate the ‘Magnificent Seven’ PhD students who recently completed their doctorates at the University of Warwick.

Charles Adeogun-Phillips (Warwick Law Alumnus, 1986) visited the Law School last month for the first time in over 30 years, to give a seminar to our students.

Charles, who founded Charles Anthony LLP, gave a talk in the Law School student hub on Friday 26 January to a mix of undergraduate students, postgraduate students and staff. He spoke about his experience at Warwick, remembering the department fondly, telling students “there was always something unique about the law here - getting to study the various subjects from a very contextual and contemporary point of view.”

Professor Ann Stewart, with the assistance of Dr Jennifer Lander, has been asked by Help Age International (a leading non-governmental organisation campaigning for and with, older people worldwide) to produce a briefing document for them on gender and ageing. Happily, people across the globe are now able to enjoy fulfilling lives for longer but many older people are not well treated. The briefing document will be used to highlight how gender issues affect many aspects of ageing.

On Thursday 8 February, Warwick Law’s Dr Andreas Kokkinis was interviewed briefly by TRT World as part of their Money Talks show. The interview focused on the meeting that PM Theresa May had attended that same day with Japanese investors. Andreas explained why loss of access to the common market would be damaging for Japanese car manufacturers in the UK – and other companies – and therefore the challenge the UK faces regarding its continuing ability to attract and retain non-EU investment.

We are delighted to share the news that one of our postgraduate students, Marilyn Eze, won a place to participate in the 2017 House of Lords Chamber Event in December of last year.

Currently studying on our LLM in International Commercial Law, Marilyn entered an essay competition in October 2017 organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society to Chevening Scholars currently studying in the UK.

The Centre for Law, Regulation and Governance of the Global Economy (GLOBE) at Warwick Law School launched a Policy Brief Series on 5 February 2018.

The series aims to provide short, policy-relevant briefings on issues of public interest and contemporary concerns within the GLOBE Centre’s thematic areas, written by GLOBE Centre colleagues.

The series supports the GLOBE Centre’s objective of disseminating our academic research in an accessible and relevant manner to broader audiences, including policymakers, the media, civil society groups and the general public. Each Policy Brief in the series will be based on the author’s current or recently published research and authors can be contacted for further information about the issues raised.

Assistant Professor Dr Henrique Carvalho has been shortlisted for a prestigious ‘Hart Socio-Legal Theory and History Prize’ for his book 'The Preventive Turn in Criminal Law'.

The book prize, presented by the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA), will be awarded for a book that makes a contribution to socio-legal theory or to the socio-legal history published in the 12 months up to 30 September 2017.
