Congratulations to Dr Andi Hoxhaj, Teaching Fellow in Warwick Law School, who has won a British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award.

The prestigious award will support Dr Hoxhaj’s work on anti-corruption policy and the rule of law with a particular focus on the Western Balkans, the UK and the EU.

Assistant Professor Dr Henrique Carvalho has been shortlisted for a prestigious ‘Hart Socio-Legal Theory and History Prize’ for his book 'The Preventive Turn in Criminal Law'.

The book prize, presented by the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA), will be awarded for a book that makes a contribution to socio-legal theory or to the socio-legal history published in the 12 months up to 30 September 2017.

Having secured funding from The Clark Foundation, Warwick Law School’s Professor Vanessa Munro will join with Professor Sharon Cowan and Dr Chloe Kennedy from the University of Edinburgh in undertaking a Scottish Feminist Judgment Project.

Following the successful completion of similar projects in other jurisdictions, including England and Wales, contributors to the Scottish Project will re-imagine and re-write key judgments of the courts within that jurisdiction from a feminist perspective.

Dr Ana Aliverti has been awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize to support her research into law enforcement.

The PLP is awarded to scholars who have made and continue to make significant and original contributions to knowledge in their field of research, and who have influenced their field sufficiently to have had an international impact. In 2017, up to 30 awards were made to UK-based outstanding research scholars within six subject areas, including Law.

The Prize will support Ana’s existing research on the novel configurations of law enforcement in a global age. She will spend the next two years researching police-immigration cooperation in domestic policing in the UK.

Professor Andrew Williams has been shortlisted for a prestigious ‘Crime Writing Daggers’ award in the non-fiction category for his book ‘A Passing Fury’. The book goes up against five other excellent pieces of writing.

The book was described by the shortlisting judges as “a compelling examination of how the war crimes trials at Nuremberg and elsewhere were imposed across the chaos and ruins of the Third Reich, interwoven with the author’s own travels, investigations and reflections.”

A substantial grant has been awarded by the Scottish Government to fund ground-breaking research into the operation of the jury within the Scottish Criminal Justice System.

The team; which will include our own Vanessa Munro, Professor of Law at the University of Warwick and Professors James Chalmers and Fiona Leverick from the University of Glasgow, will work alongside the independent research organisation Ipsos Mori, to explore three distinctive features of the unique Scottish Law System.

This study will provide vital insights into the operation of distinctive aspects of the Scottish Jury. It will involve several hundred members of the public observing trial reconstructions and participating as ‘mock jurors.'

The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme began in 2014 hoping to discover, celebrate and support exceptional young people from across the Commonwealth who are taking the lead in their communities and using their skills to transform lives. In only 3 years, there have already been two winners from Warwick Law School.

Former LLM student Bukola Bolarinwa was presented with the award as recognition of her amazing work with blood donors, to help those living with Sickle Cell in Nigeria. She set up Haima Health Initiative in 2015 to address the blood shortage in Nigeria and lack of regular donors. The organisation encourages people to get tested to know their haemoglobin genotype, carries out free genotype tests and has set up Sickle Cell clubs in schools to inform and educate young people about the condition. So far they have reached over 17, 000 people across the six area councils in Abuja.

Dr Ben Farrand has been awarded funding to run a Jean Monnet module in conjunction with the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

When asked how he felt about the award, Ben said “being awarded the funding is a testament to the quality of teaching provided at the University of Warwick - I was absolutely ecstatic to find out the application had been successful.”

The module will be offered to incoming postgraduate students from October this year, as an option on the Law School’s LLM programmes. It will be split into two parts taught across the autumn and spring terms.

Tomaso Ferrando together with Juliane Reinecke from Warwick Business School and three Brazilian colleagues, Diogo Coutinho (USP), Iage Miola, (USJT) and Flavio Prol (CEBRAP), were awarded £7,572 to co-fund the organization of a multidisciplinary event on properties in transformation that will take place in Sao Paulo in December 2016.

Alison Struthers has been awarded £9,217.76 by Warwick ESRC IAA to aid her in developing educational resources that will show how the requirement to teach fundamental British values in primary schools can be linked to broader human rights frameworks. Well done Alison.
