Revisiting Bill Law’s DOTS, Community Interaction, and Career Learning Theories

In a recent seminar, Phil McCash paid tribute to the seminal work of Bill Law whose work is known to many in the career development field. Phil argued that Bill’s ideas were ahead of their time in their focus on the role of gender and ethnicity in career development along with other community influences. The role of learning in the work of career development professionals was also emphasised. Bill Law, it was argued, helped us better understand the who, what, how, where, and why of career development.

A written copy and video recording of Phil’s presentation are available here:

'Social inequalities entering civvy street: researching the importance of class and gender in determining labour market outcomes of military veterans ESRC DTP'

Joint Studentship The University of Warwick and the University of Nottingham

We are now inviting applications for an ESRC Doctoral Joint Studentship supervised by Professor Lyonette at the Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick (where the student will be registered) and Professor Warren at the University of Nottingham (School of Sociology and Social Policy) to commence in October 2019.

Perceptions of ex-military as ‘mad, bad and sad’ have long affected the employment options open to veterans after transition. These perceptions are shaped strongly by class and gender inequalities, intensifying for working class military men and women with lower qualifications than those in higher ranks. To date, little academic research has centred on class and gender differences in achieving a successful outcome after military service. This project will focus upon a diverse group of veterans from a variety of class backgrounds and life-course stages to determine those factors which act as facilitators, and those which act as barriers, to successful employment outcomes in ‘civvy street’. It is anticipated that the project will involve creative mixed-methods research to produce original in-depth insights into the employment experiences of veterans to provide a rounded picture of inequalities in employment opportunities. We welcome further proposals and suggestions regarding the methodological approach from applicants.

Application deadline: Friday 15th March at 5pm.

Informal enquiries about the research or the Institute for Employment Research prior to application can be directed to Clare Lyonette (C.Lyonette@warwick.ac.uk).

Full details including information on eligibility requirements and how to apply can be located on the Midlands Graduate School website: https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/mgsdtp/collaborativeandjoint/

Congratulations to Dr Lorraine Johnson and Dr Jeisson Cárdenas-Rubio

We would like to congratulate two of our former students who have been awarded their doctorates today, Dr Lorraine Johnson and Dr Jeisson Cárdenas-Rubio.

Dr Johnson interviewed women about their transition from public sector work during a period of austerity focusing on the intermediary systems they used. Lorraine’s research evidenced the range of support systems used to aid transitions and provided a number of recommendations for careers practice. Lorraine is currently undertaking an early career fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Warwick.

Dr Cardenas-Rubio investigated to what extent a web-based model of skill mismatches could be developed for countries where the information on the labour market is relatively scarce. Jeisson’s research drew upon innovative methods in web scraping, big data analytics and machine learning to produce labour market information for Columbia that was analysed to provide a picture of the Columbian labour market. We are pleased that Jeisson joined the IER team earlier this year.
