Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence

Originally published 29th July 2003

Warwick University celebrated the achievements of staff who have demonstrated an exceptional standard of teaching with a special presentation at the Graduation ceremony on Friday 11 July.

The awards scheme was established in 2002 to recognise and celebrate those whose teaching is of a particularly high standard. Each award winner was presented with £5000 to support their teaching and research activities.

The Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence were presented to:

  • Dr Philippa Sherrington, Politics and International Studies
  • Dr Erica Carter, German
  • Dr Andrew Williams, Law

In presenting the awards Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor John Jones said: “This year, for the first time, we have introduced a new award for members of the academic staff at Warwick, designed to recognise excellence in teaching. With this we signal the central importance of high quality teaching at Warwick and the University’s continuing commitment to excellence in teaching.”

“The three award winners have all received the most enthusiastic endorsement from their students and their academic colleagues for the excellence of their teaching."

Students and staff were invited to nominate individuals that they felt demonstrated exceptional ability, innovative methods or had established effective links between research and teaching. Recognition was also given to staff that demonstrated excellence in student welfare and support.

Nominees for the awards were asked to submit a portfolio of evidence to support their nomination. A panel of academic staff and students was established to consider the submissions. In reviewing the nominations for the first round of the awards scheme panel members commented that the exercise had been a stimulating and enjoyable experience.

Commendations for teaching excellence were also made to:

  • Andrew Clark, Chemistry

  • Alex Stremme, Warwick Business School
