Reinvention celebrates its first birthday

Reinvention: A Journal of Undergraduate Research, a publication run by staff and undergraduate students at Warwick and Oxford Brookes universities, celebrated its first birthday in September. In this first year the journal published a special launch issue and a complete first volume.

Reinvention began by just accepting papers from their host institutions, Warwick and Oxford Brookes, but since the launch of the publication the number of papers received has increased in volume and range of subject matter. Now they receive papers from undergraduate students internationally, including submissions from Australia, India and the US.

The current issue features such diverse work as the behavioural patterns of the purple faced leaf monkey (Richard Moore, Oxford Brookes), the problem of determining ethnic group inclusion (Michael Barkasi, Kutztown University of Pennsylvania), and the relevance of post-modernism to political analysis (Fran Amery, Birmingham).

Following their success, with the website receiving over 40,000 hits and 6,500 individual visitors in their first year alone, the journal has high aspirations for 2009, and is planning to build on this success.

The second volume of the journal will be published in two issues in April and October, and a special issue is also planned for 2009. This special issue will focus on collaborative student-staff research. By publishing collaborative work, Reinvention hopes to showcase the collaborative research being carried out in universities around the world, and also to learn about the challenges and rewards of such research.

In 2009, Reinvention will also be running training sessions on writing for publication and peer review, which will be open to all undergraduate students. They invite any student who is interested to come to one of the training sessions, or to contact the journal if they would like to submit a paper or become part of the journal team.
