The Pronouns Pledge
Best estimates suggest that around 1% of the general population may identify as trans (including non-binary), with just over 1% of students at Warwick self-defining as trans. Many more are gender non-conforming and/or challenge gender stereotypes and gendered expectations.
However, there is a lack of information (as well as misinformation) about gender expression and trans identities that often results in staff and students being misgendered, particularly through the use of incorrect gendered pronouns.
The good news? There are some simple actions you can take to improve the experience of trans and gender non-conforming people at Warwick!
We've created the Pronouns Pledge to make it as simple as possible to engage with inclusive best practice on pronouns, and to build a movement of people taking these steps together.
By taking the Pronouns Pledge you commit to these six simple actions:
- Wearing a pronoun badge as often as you can on campus. (You can collect a badge from the seating area opposite Senate House Reception.)
- Introducing yourself with your pronouns, for example at the start of meetings, or when meeting someone new.
- Including your pronouns in your email signature and profiles. (You can find out how to update your email signature here and how to update your Microsoft profile here.)
- Asking people for their chosen pronouns, rather than assuming them.
- Challenging the incorrect use of pronouns and misgendering by others.
- Reading and sharing relevant resources, such as this introductory guide to pronouns, or this guide to challenging incorrect pronouns and misgendering.
