The Doctoral College invite applications from PhD students for one fully-funded place at a major national postgraduate conference, ‘Life Beyond the PhD’.
The conference will take place 16 to 20 August 2021 at the stunning venue of Cumberland Lodge, set in the Royal landscape of Windsor Great Park. This annual conference is a unique celebration of postgraduate research culture in the UK, inviting PhD students from across the country to exchange ideas, practices, experiences and aspirations. It gives PhD students an outstanding opportunity to share research, explore collaborative and interdisciplinary ways of working and to present to a diverse, non-expert audience.
The varied programme includes sessions on:
- Presentation skills and writing for non-academic audiences
- Sharing research with non-specialists
- Dedicated 1:1 CV writing skills
- Collaboration skills to optimise social impact
Leading figures in academia and outside will explain how their research has influenced and enriched their lives.
The key to the event is that PhD students are shown that PhDs have demonstrable value both inside and outside academia. The support networks established by these events have proved to be invaluable whatever the future holds.
The Doctoral College invites applications from PhD students, who are in their second or third year (or part-time equivalent) of registration in any discipline. The University will cover the registration fee for one selected candidate for the four night stay, including all meals.
As a condition of the funding we expect a short report to be written after attending the conference to share your experiences so that we may use this on our website or in marketing materials in the future. We will then, once this has been submitted, reimburse reasonable travel expenses.
How to Apply
You will be required to provide a statement of interest indicating what skills and experiences you hope to gain from attending this conference (300 words maximum).
Your application will be considered on the basis of your written statement. You must be available to attend the full conference in Windsor from 16 to 20 August 2021. The successful candidate will be notified by 16 June 2021.
