The Group Project as Authentic Assessment: Challenges, Lessons, and Rewards

In this session I will share my experience of assessing a 15 CAT History module, “African American History and Culture” via a group project. For their assessment, students were required, in groups, to plan a fictional Black History Month programme at a real US university, including the submission of a formal proposal form with a full budget and a poster. They were also tasked with writing an academic rationale for their proposals. In this session I will reflect on some of the lessons I learned in setting this type of assessment, and we will discuss the many rewards, challenges and possibilities of setting group work as authentic assessment.
