Reassessments

Reassessments

It’s completely normal for some assessments to not go as well as expected. That's why you're provided with the opportunity to take reassessments, to support you to succeed.

At Warwick, you may hear the term 'resit' or 'reassessment' used in different ways, or interchangeably. The terminology can sometimes seem confusing - but don't worry, you’ll receive clear instructions on what you need to do and when.

How does it all work?

Before results are released, each department's Exam Board reviews all students' academic performance. To progress or graduate, students must pass a certain number of CATs (credits) each year. The Exam Board decides:

  • If you can automatically progress / graduate.
  • If you need to complete required reassessments in order to progress or graduate.
  • If you can be provided with the opportunity to take optional reassessments (to improve your overall mark).

Following this, your results and details reassessment detailed are shared with you.

Support Available

1. Your Academic Department

Always speak to your Personal Tutor or Senior Tutor. They can:

  • help to explain your reassessments;
  • help you to complete reassessment forms (if you have optional reassessments);
  • support you through the process.

2. Wellbeing Support

If you are finding things overwhelming, you can contact the Wellbeing and Student Support Team. They can offer individual or group support, virtually or in-person.

Key Information

How will I be notified if I have reassessments?

  1. Email from Student Records - on Results Release Day, you'll receive an email from the Student Records Team with essential details such as your progression status, any required or optional reassessments, and next steps. (Your marks will be in Tabula).
  2. Your Department - after this, your department may contact you with further information. This could include: deadlines, guidance on what to do next, and support options. You'll get clear instructions on what's required (such an an in-person exam, essay, or coursework etc), and plenty of time to prepare. If you're unsure, just ask your module tutor, personal tutor or the Programmes Team.
  3. Tabula - reassessment details appear under the 'Assignments' tab, but may take some time to appear. If you're unsure, contact the Programmes Team in your department.

Types of Reassessments: Required or Optional?

Required Reassessments

If you've been notified that you have required reassessments, this means:

  • You haven't yet met the minimum requirements (marks/credits) to progress or graduate.
  • You must retake the failed components of your failed modules (e.g. essay, exam, presentation).
  • Once you’ve retaken and passed, you can move into the next year, or graduate.
  • These are mandatory - you'll be automatically registered.
  • You will find out which of the modules require resits in Tabula and via an email from Student Records. Full details will be provided by your department.

Optional Reassessments

If you've been offered optional reassessments, this means:

  • You have met the requirements to progress or graduate, but have failed a module.
  • You can choose to retake the failed components of that module to try to improve your mark, which might improve your overall degree classification.

Key points:

  • It's completely up to you whether you complete none, or all, of the optional reassessments offered to you.

  • Your decision to take an optional reassessment is likely to depend on:

    • Your current mark

    • Whether it is offered as a Further First Attempt or a capped resit

    • The amount of work vs potential benefit

  • Taking an optional reassessment may delay graduation or progression, so factor that in and speak to your personal tutor for support.

All reassessments (whether required or optional) are held at the next available opportunity.

  • You will automatically be registered for the optional reassessments offered to you.
  • If you do not wish to take them, you need opt out by completing the Non-Finalist Optional Resit Form.

Things to consider:

  • You cannot schedule to take an optional reassessment in the following summer, but still proceed to your next year of study as normal. You can only proceed once the reassessment has taken place.
  • This means that optional reassessments taken in the September resit period will not affect your ability to progress.
  • However, if you are offered further optional reassessments after the September results release, you will need to decide:
    • whether to progress without taking further reassessments;
    • whether to take those reassessments without residence (i.e. you will not be able to progress to the next year of your course until you have completed them in the next summer exam period).

    Types of Grading: Further First Attempt or Capped

    All reassessments are either a:

    • Further First Attempt (FFA) - your mark is not capped (you can achieve full marks).
    • Capped Resit - your mark is capped at 40%, even if you score higher.

    Which one applies?

    It depends on whether you have approved mitigating circumstances. Your department should specify whether your reassessment is a 'Further First Attempt' or Capped Resit when your initial results are released. If you're unsure - always ask!
