Funding Postgraduate studies

A blog by Charlotte, Student Money Assistant

Pursuing postgraduate studies is an exciting opportunity to deepen your knowledge, develop specialised skills and enhance career prospects. Whether you are considering a Master’s degree or a research-focused PhD, a wide range of support and funding options are available to assist you.

Postgraduate Study Options

Postgraduate studies typically fall into two main categories: taught programmes (like Master’s degrees) and research degrees (such as PhDs). Taught programmes, including MA, MSc and MBA degrees, typically involve structured coursework, lectures and assessments. Research degrees, however, emphasise independent study under the guidance of the academic expert, culminating in a thesis or dissertation.

Funding and Financial Support

There are several options for funding opportunities. The UK government offers Postgraduate Loans for home students (UK residents). Eligible students can apply for a Master’s loan to help cover tuition and living costs. Similarly, PhD students can apply for a Doctoral Loan if they are eligible, and these are also there to help cover tuition fees and living expenses. Postgraduate Loans are not based on your household income and the eligibility criteria are detailed on the government website.

Alternatively, PhD students may be eligible for funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) councils, which can cover tuition fees and provide a living stipend. These scholarships are typically competitive and awarded based on academic merit and the impact of the research proposal. If you are considering a PhD, it is advisable to explore potential funding options through UKRI early on.

Many universities, including Warwick, provide competitive scholarships for outstanding postgraduate students. These awards may be merit-based, finance based or for specific academic disciplines. Notable scholarships include the Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarships, aimed at exceptional international PhD students, and Warwick Taught Masters Scholarships, which offer partial or full tuition support to exceptional Home Master's degree applicants. It’s a good idea to explore the funding options available at your chosen university (if you want to leave Warwick), as many institutions offer a variety of scholarships and bursaries aimed at supporting students from diverse backgrounds!

Lastly, there is the possibility for employer and industry-sponsored funding. In some cases, employers may fund postgraduate studies if they align with career development, covering tuition fees or offering study leave. This is common in fields like business, healthcare, engineering and law. This is especially good for those that want to start working but may want to go for a postgraduate degree on the side. It is worth contacting your employers and discussing the potential for these opportunities!
